Pilot

In New Zealand you begin with a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), then progress to a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), adding instrument or multi-engine ratings as needed. With a CPL (typically after 200 + flight hours, a first-class medical check, theory exams and a flight test), you become eligible to fly professionally - from scenic and charter flights to corporate or commercial operations.

About the role

Pilots are responsible for safely navigating aircraft and ensuring every flight runs smoothly from take-off to touchdown. Their work begins well before entering the cockpit - preparing and checking flight plans, reviewing weather forecasts, and assessing the aircraft’s load, fuel requirements, and equipment. Pilots programme flight management systems, communicate with air traffic control, and oversee all key stages of the journey as they navigate the aircraft to its destination.

After landing, pilots complete flight reports, update the flight log, and review any operational notes for future trips. In passenger-carrying roles, they may also greet travellers and assist with any needs to ensure a safe, comfortable experience.

A pilot’s career suits people who enjoy responsibility, precision, teamwork, and the excitement of flying.

To earn your pilot licence, most begin through their local Aero Club, gaining skills and accumulating hours as they work towards their Private Pilot License (PPL) before progressing to their Commerical Pilot License (CPL). Or you can attend an aviation school - Nelson Aviation College or Massey University offer pathways too.

As a secondary school student, our Introduction to Flight gateway programme is a great way to explore a career as a Pilot and will connect you with your local Aero Club - gaining credits and learning more about what it takes to become a pilot.
