Delivered in partnership with local aero clubs, Introduction to Flight gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the world of aviation. You'll explore aircraft components, aviation terminology, principles of flight, two-way radio communication, and the health, safety, security and operational procedures that keep New Zealand’s skies safe.

In this course, you’ll build foundational knowledge and practical skills for working in aviation. You’ll learn how to contribute effectively within a team, operate two-way radio communication in an airport environment, and apply essential health, safety, and security practices relevant to aviation roles. The course also covers aviation support structures, aircraft types and operations within New Zealand, and introduces key concepts such as aircraft components, the principles of flight, and aviation terminology. You’ll also explore a range of career and training pathways within the aviation industry.
You will be a year 11-13 secondary school student on the course start date, and an NZ Citizen or permanent NZ resident.

Students provide their own Chromebook or Laptop to complete online learning and assessments via Moodle.
PPE is provided, students must wear covered shoes and long hair will be tied back.
Two real flights are included in this course which your local Aero Club will have pre-flight checks for, including a self-declaration of your health and medical status (and you may be asked to note anything that could affect your ability to fly safely i.e. heart conditions, epilepsy, recent surgeries, motion sickness).
Completing the Introduction to Flight course is a great first step toward a range of exciting careers in aviation. Many students go on to pursue their Private Pilot Licence (PPL), and for those aiming higher, a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) opens the door to professional flying opportunities. But flying isn’t the only path - this course also introduces you to a wide variety of roles within the aviation sector, including air traffic control, ground operations, aircraft engineering, airport security, flight planning, and customer service. From here, you can choose to be in the cockpit or part of the vital support network that keeps airports and aircraft running smoothly.
Your flight hours on this course do count towards your PPL.
You can complete your pilot training through your local aero club or choose to do the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Level 5) which will also support you to gain your PPL or CPL, and lead into roles such as commercial pilot, flight instructor or other aviation related careers.
