McKenzie’s path from student to aviation professional.

McKenzie's passion for aviation began in 2023, when he attended JNP Aviation Training’s Secondary Schools Open Day. Inspired by what he saw, McKenzie enrolled in our inaugural Introduction to Ground Handling Micro-credential for Secondary Schools. Through this course, he got an up-close look at the aviation industry — exploring airport terminal operations, ramp procedures, Air Traffic Control, and Rescue Fire. These experiences opened his eyes to the many career paths available in aviation and sparked a curiosity for the airport industry.

In 2024, McKenzie returned to JNP Aviation Training to further his skills by completing the Certificate in Aviation (Ground Handling – Ramp Operations Strand, Level 3). After graduating later that year, he began working in Aircraft Cleaning for ATR and Q300 aircraft, taking another step toward his ultimate goal of becoming an Air Traffic Controller. At the same time, he’s eager to continue developing his skills and broaden his experience within Ramp Operations.

McKenzie’s commitment soon caught the attention of his manager. He was selected to take part in the Leadership in Aviation Micro-credential, joining a cohort of experienced Ramp Managers and Team Leaders from across New Zealand. Through this programme, McKenzie gained valuable insights into leadership, teamwork, and communication — learning what it takes to guide and contribute effectively within an aviation team in a highly regulated, safety and security conscious workplace.

Now, with hands-on experience, recognised qualifications, and growing leadership skills, McKenzie is committed to his future in aviation.

McKenzie's experience studying with JNPAT...

McKenzie loved the hands-on approach to learning. He thought using our Training Aircraft (ATR/72) provided a unique opportunity to keep practicing and to simulate common scenarios. Having access to staff already in the role to provide feedback an tips is really useful. Learning what to do early on and then being able to say why it's done that way is part of the learning curve.

Their introduction to aviation with JNPAT...

Before the course, I had no idea there were so many roles within the aviation industry. Being around aviation and showing enthusiasm really helps in getting that first role. Completing the Gateway and Certificate courses also showed my commitment and real interest in the industry.
