We offer a range of industry-led hands-on training courses to secondary school students in three key areas of the aviation industry - ground operations, flight and aeronautical engineering. These are vocational learning experiences designed to introduce students to potential career pathways in the aviation industry, providing valuable insight and workplace experience. Schools have often used Gateway funding for these courses as they are run in aviation workshops, aero clubs using live aircraft and in airports using live baggage handling equipment, communication and safety workplace systems.
Thanks to our connection with our sister company, JNP Aviation which provides ground operations services at many airports, our learners gain exclusive access to real airport environments. This unique partnership means students experience firsthand the dynamic roles within the aviation industry - offering a true sense of what it’s like to work behind the scenes at an airport gaining exposure to airport ground operations students would not otherwise be able to access. This is a key advantage in choosing our courses for your students.
We also work with Aero Clubs across New Zealand to provide introductory flight courses for students curious about flight and we have partnered with Classic Flyers Engineering Division to offer aeronautical engineering courses at our main education hub in Tauranga.
The Head of Future Pathways from one of our awesome Bay of Plenty Schools says this about our courses:
"Our boys have been involved in a Gateway Program that JNPAT developed to start students on their journey to becoming aircraft ground crew and they have massively appreciated the opportunity. Eight students from TBC have been through the first two intakes and we have a further four on the next intake as a result of the rave reviews from the first group. It is our opinion that JNPAT provides vocational education in the perfect way, by working as a training provider in an exciting workplace and collaborating with schools in the process.
Like many kura, our target learners are Māori and Pasifika students and it is great to be able to put our boys in a training situation where we know that their mana will be respected. Having had the opportunity to get to know CEO Josh Payne who has Māori and Niuean descent I consider him to be a role model of the best sort. He demonstrates to our boys what success looks like in a challenging and interesting industry and we really value his contribution to the program"
Our Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering course can be credited toward our Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (Pre-employment Skills) Level 3, delivered from our Tauranga Education Base. This course offers a practical overview of the industry, helping students decide whether aeronautical engineering is the right path for them and can then progress to the Certificate - an ideal next step for school leavers - building the foundational knowledge needed to enter apprenticeships and continue toward a career in aviation engineering. For more information, please see the flyer in the resource list below or ask students to email info@jnpat.ac.nz

When students learn with us they are experiencing the delivery of ground operations services via our unique relationship with JNP Aviation. This industry connection often provides opportunities for our top students to then move into ground services roles with JNP Aviation. Once they are employed they can then return to study with us on our workplace training courses including the New Zealand Certificate in Aviation (Ground Handling) (Level 3). This certificate leads onto New Zealand Diploma's in Airport Operations (Level 4, 5).

Our Introduction to Flight course allows Aero Clubs to educate those students who are career focused pilots on how to obtain their Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Instructor Ratings. The flying hours included as part of this course also count towards their required flying hours. The academic pathways for flight include various strands of the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (Levels 5, 6).

As a direct pathway from our aeronautical engineering school course and for any school leavers we offer a New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering (pre-employment skills) Level 3 in Tauranga, in conjunction with industry experts from the Engineering and Education Hangar at Classic Flyers - this prepares students for apprenticeship opportunities in employment. In an apprenticeship role they would work towards the New Zealand Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering Applied Skills (Level 4). From here there are many opportunities to study in this high demand field at levels 3, 4 and 6.
Students must be in years 11-13 to enrol. Our courses run one day per week for 10 weeks across our learning sites - at airports, aero clubs and our own education base in Tauranga. Yes! Most schools fund our courses through their government funding streams such as Gateway. Our courses are eligible because they consist of hands-on practical learning in the workplace. To keep your learners safe, at times we do use aviation equipment out of the range of large aircarft, but still within the workplace environment. As you can imagine, the aviation environment is highly safety regulated and it is our responsibilty to keep learners safe at all times. Please see our Course Specific Info resource below for more detail.
Once your school has enrolled students with us we will send you an MOU between "JNPAT" and "Your School". This agreement is signed by both parties and outlines each of our responsibilities.
