About the role

Air Traffic Controllers play a critical role in keeping the skies safe. They monitor and direct aircraft movements on the ground and in the air, provide pilots with vital information on weather, flight paths, and other operational data, and coordinate with other controllers to maintain safe distances between aircraft.

A career in air traffic control requires strong communication skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and excellent problem-solving. In New Zealand, controllers usually complete specialized training, and a degree in aviation or a related field is often preferred. It’s a high-responsibility, fast-paced job where every decision impacts passenger safety and flight efficiency, offering clear pathways to senior or specialist roles within air traffic management.
