Young Women Explore the World of Aeronautical Engineering

JNP Aviation Training has welcomed its first Young Women cohort onto our Introduction to Aeronautical Engineering micro-credential, bringing together young women from Auckland, Whakatāne, Rotorua and Tauranga to explore aviation and aircraft engineering.

Delivered from Classic Flyers in Tauranga, this programme has given these students the opportunity to step inside an industry where women remain under-represented and create aspirations to build careers in aviation engineering.

Rather than simply learning about aviation from a classroom, students have been able to get hands-on, experience what its like to be in a real aviation workshop and develop practical skills.

A highlight of the programme has been the guest sessions with women working across the aviation and aerospace industries. Students heard from Bernice Hintz, Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and Pilot; Nikki Sutherland, People & Talent Advisor at Salus Aviation; Katrine Amiria, a second-year apprentice at Salus Aviation; and Keshika Warnakula, Senior Flight Design Engineer at SYOS Aerospace.

Our CEO, Josh elaborates... “We wanted to create an environment where young women could come together, get hands-on with aviation and see for themselves what a career in aeronautical engineering could look like. There are some incredible opportunities in this industry, and we want more young women to know they are there.”

Our inaugural cohort has demonstrated the value of creating hands-on opportunities that encourage more young women to consider careers in aviation and engineering. This first cohort marks an exciting beginning for JNP Aviation Training — and hopefully the beginning of many more young women finding their place in aviation.
