A New Aviation Opportunity for Students in Eastern BOP for 2027

We're excited to be partnering with Futures Academy in 2027 to give Year 11-13 students in the Eastern Bay of Plenty the opportunity to explore aviation and experience what happens behind the scenes at an airport.

Based at Whakatāne Airport, this programme will run one day per week across terms 1-3 and combine our Take Off - Aviation Ground Handling micro-credential with additional Unit Standards introducing students to careers and training options in aviation.

Just like our other courses for secondary school students, they will get to experience the fast-paced world of airport ground operations and learn what it takes to keep an airport running safely and efficiently. They'll get hands-on experience with things like aviation communication, two-way radio procedures, baggage handling, dangerous goods awareness, and aviation health, safety and security requirements.

Students will also get to travel to our main port and education hub at Tauranga Airport one day of each term - accessing even more of our training facilities and resources, and experiencing the buzz of a busy airport!

Working alongside industry professionals, and local operators, students will also get a better understanding of the different roles within aviation and the skill needed to work in a highly regulated industry.

For schools and students, this partnership provides access to an aviation training opportunity using a different funding avenue, giving more young people the chance to try something different, gain real industry experience and see what aviation might have to offer.
