Take Off Launches in Whakatāne – Josh Returns to Where It All Began to Inspire the Next Generation

Our Take Off micro-credential in Aviation Ground Handling launches in Whakatàne, and is a full-circle moment for our CEO, Josh Payne.

Our Take Off – Aviation Ground Handling micro-credential is now being delivered in Whakatane to secondary school students and is designed to introduce them to the fast-paced, hands-on environment of aviation ground services. From aircraft marshalling and ramp safety to communication and operational coordination, students gain real-world skills aligned with industry expectations.

What makes this inaugural cohort even more special is the story behind the instructor leading it.

Josh, CEO of both JNP Aviation and JNP Avaition Training, began his own aviation journey in Whakatāne as a “rampie” working on the tarmac. Now, he returns to where it all started, to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals!

“This really is a full circle moment,” he says. “To come back to where I first stepped onto the ramp and now be able to open that same door for young people- it’s pretty special.”

The programme is more than just an introduction to aviation. It’s about building confidence, work readiness, and showing students that meaningful careers can start right in their own community.

Through hands-on, practical learning, students are exposed to real aviation environments and expectations - developing communication skills, teamwork, and a strong understanding of safety and operational discipline.

The support of Rangitāiki College has been instrumental in making the programme accessible, reinforcing the importance of strong partnerships between education and industry.

As the aviation sector continues to look for skilled, work-ready people, initiatives like this are helping bridge the gap- connecting young people with real opportunities and clear pathways into employment.

And for this first group of students in Whakatāne, their journey is already underway, guided by someone who once stood exactly where they are now!!
