Aviation is one of the most regulated industries in the world. To resume operations safely, airlines and ground handling agents must comply with legal requirements and provide recurrent training to ensure the competence of employees.

JNP Aviation Training (JNPAT), aviation’s leading NZQA accredited tertiary training provider, is offering this NZQA approved package of learning for Year 11 to 13 students in the Bay of Plenty.

TAKE OFF is also stacked towards the following:

• New Zealand Certificate in Ground Operations, Ramp Handing (Level 3)
• New Zealand Certificate in Airport Operations (Levels 4 and 5)

Pathway structure

Each 17 credit Pathway is taught across a total of 10 weeks (including 2 weeks study break across term 1 break). Intakes commence within New Zealand Secondary School terms (10 max students per intake).

All onsite PPE, delivery resources, workbooks (including LMS content) and assessment material will be provided by JNPAT and issued to students at the JNPAT Induction. Time has been left between each intake to allow for student catch ups or additional assistance, credit reporting, all administration, teaching preparation and academic and stakeholder meetings. It is preferable that students BYD (bring your own device), however there are desktop computers available at the JNPAT classrooms.

Pathway Academic terms

10 days onsite at JNPAT

• 1d/week face to face JNPAT

• 1d/week face to face school pathways teacher classwork – moodle LMS and JNPAT resources

Learning hours

Total face to face (blended learning) hours (10 hrs/week) 100 Hours.

Tutor-directed independent study hours (approx. 6 hr/week) workbook reading and moodle activities 62 Hours.

Assessment (hours) Practical onsite assessment and theory 8 Hours.

You will learn to communicate effectively in a team, use terminology related to two-way radio communications and transmit and receive two-way radio communications at an airport.

Learn Aviation Lingo


It is super important in aviation to know and apply the very important safety and security rules in aviation ground operations. You will learn the correct Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) needed when out with the aircraft on the apron and the rules in place that keep staff and passengers safe and secure when at the airport.


You will learn to prepare to sort passenger baggage, interpret baggage label information and process special baggage, sort baggage according to labelled information and carry out baggage reconciliation.

Did you know, the ground operations staff are not just throwing those bags into the back of the aircraft? They are sorting bags according to baggage labels and calculating weight and distribution to make sure the aircraft is flying efficiently. No nose diving!


You will learn how to check a baggage trolley before use to ensure it is safe and in working order and how to disconnect and connect trolleys and set them up ready for loading.
